That would mean religious nutters could say “I believe in god” but not “I believe that god exists.” Although sometimes I question if the former is even true with some of these believers… They seem to mourn the passing of loved ones as much as atheists, as if their relatives AREN’T going to some paradise with their creator. Rather odd, if you ask me. If I truly believed, I’d be celebrating: “Must have been your time, all part of god’s plan, see you soon, it’ll be BRILLIANT!” So, deep down, I think many of them don’t believe, or are highly doubtful about the whole thing. I know I was, before I broke from the shackles of attempted childhood indoctrination. But I wander off topic…

Agree wholeheartedly, but some people can’t be reasoned with in the first place. Just for fun, I might go stand within earshot of some religious people and when they say “I believe that god…” I’ll cut in “Nuh-uh-uh-uh,” perhaps with a Supernanny finger wave, and explain the error in their logic, quoting from a printout of your blog (which I would naturally reference.) I’m wandering again…

Well yes, but this is trivialised due to the fact that there are an infinite number of things you could believe in, but only a limited amount of evidence. It is ridiculous to attempt to go through all of these latent beliefs and looking for evidence only when “believing” them, as you say.

This is not true either. The burden of proof is on the positive claim — i.e., the person holding the belief.

Sometimes you need to believe something in order to begin the search for evidence. It’s when there’s good evidence in the contrary and not on your side when your belief begins to fail.

Sorry for the very late response….

My main problem with your argument is the word “thus” in the second paragraph. There is no correlation between the fact that the earth deteriorates, and that its value is calculated by support of life.

If you are trying to argue that environmentalists aren’t so bad because they’re protecting the human species, see my response to marsheemarsh.

I do believe that most Environmentalists justify their position by saying that the Earth, if not cared for properly, will not be able to support human life

Thus, destroying the earth is quantified by the type and amount of life it is able to support and how long it is able to maintain that support
